Why California Sees So Many Of These

Restaurants and shops take the heaviest hit of all.
A lot of these claims start in the parking lot. Someone drives by, spots a missing or wrong sign from the street, and that is enough to build a case. That is the part owners miss. The first violation a filer finds is almost always a sign.
The Signs That Draw Claims First
Not every ADA sign carries the same risk. A handful get cited over and over:

What Makes A Sign Actually Compliant

- Raised characters and contracted braille, done to spec.
- Strong contrast between the letters and the background, with a non-glare finish.
- Pictograms sized and placed correctly.
- Mounted at the set height, on the latch side of the door.
A sign run off a home printer and taped to the wall meets none of this. California also enforces its own building code that goes past the federal standard in spots, so a sign that clears a federal check can still fall short here.
Where Signs Stop

Accessibility is the whole property. Parking slope, grab bar height, counter reach, ramp grade, and door clearance.
